Pet Sitting Safety Tips

Pet Sitting Safety Tips

As mentioned in the video above, here is a copy of COVID19 Letter 2 to Clients and Health Safety Guidelines for my clients during these hard times.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the pet sitting industry has been hit real hard. A lot of us are struggling with it, but I’m here to remind you that this is temporary.

pet sitting safety tips quote

Guess what? Now is the time when you can sit down and focus on your business. Let’s try and look at the positive of the situation and make the most of our time.

As examples, here are some updates regarding my company.

(1) In Pennsylvania, where I live, Governor Wolf said that animal care was not an essential business. So we closed our doors entirely, and I furloughed my entire staff of pet sitters. These make them eligible for unemployment, and they will have a position with me when my company opens its doors again.

(2) I kept my three managers working in streamlining the business. We go through our manuals, update our standard operating procedures, go through our email list, create a marketing action plan, etc.

(3) Last week, Governor Wolf moved animal care over to the essential business list. By the time I’m recording this video, we have not yet reopened but I have drafted a letter, wherein I try to evaluate who among my clients needs pet care services.

If there is a need, I then contact my sitters and say, “If work becomes available, would you be willing to get back out into the field?” Then based on those responses, I’ll be matching up my customers with the sitters.

(4) I provided COVID-19 healthy safety guidelines for both sitters and clients, as listed below.

Pet Sitter Guidelines

  1. Pet sitters should sanitize their hands before entering our client’s home
  2. Pet sitters must wash their hands for 20 seconds immediately after entering the client’s home
  3. Pet sitter refills the water bowl after washing their hands
  4. Pet sitter wipes the leash with an antibacterial wipe or spray.
  5. Pet sitters wipe off any surfaces touched with an antibacterial wipe or spray, including door handles, keypads, and lockboxes
  6. Pet sitter washes their hands when exiting the client’s home
  7. Pet sitter is to alert the Pet Nanny office if they suspect an illness and are uncomfortable returning to the client’s home

Client Guidelines

  1. Client wipes down any surfaces like door handles and faucet handles with an antibacterial cleaner or wipes before the pet sitter arrives for their visit
  2. Clients are to have soap, paper towels, and running water immediately available
  3. If the client is home and the pet sitter arrives for a visit, there are two options
    • Option one, the client washes their hands, prepares their dogs for their walk, and then does a hand-off at the door with their pets sitter
    • Option two, the client goes to another part of the house while their pet sitter follows the procedures stated above
  4. If the client does become sick on a day where we have a scheduled visit, the client is to let the office know as soon as possible so that we can cancel the scheduled visit and any upcoming visits

Here are other ways you can do to create cash flow during these hard times:

  • Contact your customers and give an early booking discount. If they book any visits for the summer now, you might want to give them a little discount
  • Offer concierge services if you’re comfortable going out. People are scared to go shopping and doing that sort of stuff
  • Poop scooping services

This pandemic is temporary, and we’re all in this together. I am here for you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything whatsoever. Stay healthy, stay well, and I’ll talk to you soon.

Think BIG & Dream BIGGER

Think BIG & Dream BIGGER

You must set high goals for yourself to achieve great things in life

When I speak to a client about how much money they want to make in their pet sitting business, I am shocked at the answers that I receive.  The responses usually range anywhere from $30,000 to $75,000.  That’s an average of $52,500 per year for what these businesses hope and wish they could make. I find this not only shocking but also sad. You see, you must set high goals for yourself to achieve great things in life, and with all of these pet sitting business owners setting the bar so low for themselves, it’s no wonder there are so few profitable pet sitting businesses out there.

I‘m here to tell you that you CAN make so much more in your business and that you don’t have to play small. You can create a greatly prosperous and professionally fulfilling pet sitting business. I know that it may not seem possible, but I can tell you from experience that it is! By creating systems and leverage techniques you can ignite your pet sitting business into a moneymaking machine. First, you must change your mindset:

You must think BIGGER, dream BIGGER and BELIEVE that you can do it. Then you have to do the work.

My personal business coach, Fabienne Fredrickson, shared with me a paragraph from Louise Hay’s book “You Can Heal Your Life.” This excerpt has resonated with me and hopefully it will do the same for you.

“I love the visualization of standing at the seashore looking out at the vast ocean and knowing that this ocean is the abundance that is available to me. Look down at your hands and see what sort of container you are holding. Is it a teaspoon, a thimble with a hole in it, a paper cup, a glass, a tumbler, a pitcher, a bucket, a washtub, or perhaps you have a pipeline connected to this ocean of abundance? Look around you and notice that no matter how many people there are and no matter what kind of container they have, there is plenty for everyone. You cannot rob another, and they cannot rob you. And in no way can you drain the ocean dry. Your container is your consciousness, and it can always be exchanged for a larger container.”

Think BIG & Dream BIGGER quote

After I read this I looked at myself and realized that I was carrying only a small pitcher. I wanted to make money, but I was content with “just enough.” That was the thought that I constantly told myself. (You have to start becoming keen to the sabotaging thoughts that go through your mind.) It wasn’t until I shifted my mindset and asked the universe to triple my income that the right opportunities started to present themselves. It’s strange how the universe works. “Ask and you shall receive.” It’s so true.

Your Homework Assignment:

Picture yourself on the shoreline, feet in the sand, looking out at our vast ocean of abundance. What’s in your hands? Now, change that mental picture to that large pipeline. Next start writing the goals down as if you have already received them and are so grateful. Remember, you can’t ask for too much because you can never exhaust the supply of abundance that is available to you.

  1. I’m so happy and grateful that I received 5 new clients this week. I’m so grateful! Thank you universe!
  2. I’m so happy and grateful that I hired 2 new fabulous, responsible pet sitters this week. I’m so happy and grateful. Thank you universe!
  3. I’m so happy and grateful that I made an additional $50,000 in revenue this year.

You get the picture. Be specific as possible and always be grateful for it. Without that element you won’t get very far. Remember, you are the only person that can set the limits. Think BIG, dream BIG and BELIEVE you can do it. I believe in you.

Here is one of my actual goal cards

Implement Quickly

Implement Quickly and You Will See Results

“The biggest difference between an average income and financial freedom is Implementation.” –Bill Glazer

There are some people in this world that take action and implement and sadly there are others that don’t. Let’s just say I have 2 different people purchase my product, 9 Secrets to Building a Stellar Team of Pet Sitters.

This product includes everything one needs to create a fabulous team of competent pet sitters. It has the EXACT documents, emails and procedures that I use to build my team of 30+ pet sitters. All these two people have to do is implement the systems and strategies in their own businesses. The first person grabs it and runs with it. They go home and take everything they were given and put it into immediate action. The other person takes it home and reads through it, then puts it down. Then a month later picks it up again and thumbs through it all the while humming and hawing that they’re “too busy,” or that they “know this stuff already,” or they’ll “get to it next month.” Now, from those two types of people who do you think is going to have the more successful business? The first person, of course! This person is a doer! They IMPLEMENT. They don’t need to ask questions, or over-analyze or complain or make excuses. They just do it and they do it quickly.

pet sitters implement quickly

Would it surprise you to learn that most successful millionaire entrepreneurs believe that implementation (a.k.a “getting things done”) have named it as the number one KEY to success? That doesn’t surprise me at all… because it’s true!

I’m no stranger to procrastination. I understand it completely, but I can say with total confidence that when you finally decide to just bite the bullet and get something done, it is far less painful and time consuming than what you have created in your mind. Therefore, it’s worth the effort. Plus, the satisfaction that you’ll get from finally putting a check mark next to that task is priceless!

Here is a mantra that I follow in my business, “ACT WITH SPEED.” I have learned first-hand that it is not only the act of implementation, but actually the speed with which you do it that will show you a drastic return on your investment.

Your Homework Assignment:

  1. How can you implement more effectively?
  2. What do you have on your To-Do list for a long while? Put a deadline on the tasks, write them on your calendar and get them done! No excuses please.

Hiring Pet Sitters For Your Business

The Struggle of Hiring Pet Sitters

Why is hiring pet sitters a problem for some business owners?

One of the most common problems discussed by my students or in my Facebook group is the struggle of hiring pet sitters to grow their business. Sometimes even the thought of hiring a team is too scary and so they decide to stay small, stay working for themselves, being a sole proprietorship.

Then some people take the leap and try to find good people, but they run into issues getting reliable sitters which leads them to give up and go back to running a one-person show.

As we know, there are only so many hours for dollars that you can trade in a single day. So, you’re automatically putting a ceiling over your head with how much revenue you can build in your pet sitting business.

To make a substantial income in this industry, you need to leverage yourself through a team of heart-centered pet care professionals that are going to take stellar care of your client’s pets.

Hiring Pet Sitters

Now, hiring is difficult. It is hard. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that something’s easy when it’s not.

Finding good people is something that we work on daily at Pet Nanny-Pet Sitters of The Main Line. We have a system for hiring and we’ve used it consistently to grow the team and the business.

There are two steps I want you to take if you want to get serious and grow an amazing team of pet care professionals.

1. Create an attraction system

First,  you need to create a system where you are continuously attracting potential sitters so that you can pick the best candidates for your business.

Your time is precious which means you want to make sure you weed out the applicants who will not work before you even have your first initial interview with them.

2. Test potential sitters at the interview stage

Then you need to have a second system for the interview process to see how your new sitter would perform in different situations.

Their work is going to be a direct reflection on your pet sitting business, therefore, you need to be happy with how they work before you hire them for your company.

Also, this needs to be part of your regular daily business practices. You can’t say, “Okay, I really need sitters,” and then just hope and pray that a resume lands in your inbox.

You need to constantly have a system on autopilot where you are getting the message out that you’re hiring and you’re looking for great people. This leads to interviewing on a weekly basis and putting people through your systems on a weekly basis. That is how you build an amazing team. Yes, it is challenging, but don’t let that stop you from growing.

Currently, we have 40 pet sitters at Pet Nanny-Pet Sitters of The Main Line and we still have weekly meetings discussing where we’re going to find people. In this way, we have grown the most amazing team and the most amazing business.

So, if this is what you want to do, don’t let fear hold you back from hiring pet sitters. Create the attraction system, create the hiring system, make it part of your daily business practices, and you will be able to do it.

Tax Tips for Pet Sitters

Tax Tips for Pet Sitters

Plan ahead and never again get caught short at tax time

Taxes used to stress me out more than you can imagine. Every year I would be shaking in my boots as I anxiously awaited to hear what I owed. The problem was that I never planned ahead. Why didn’t I plan ahead? Because I didn’t know how. You don’t know what you don’t know. Now you will know. Pet Sitters that follow the simple method below will always be prepared for the tax man.

Tax Tips for Pet Sitters

#1. You need to stay on top of what your quarterly tax payments need to be and if you’re making more money than you anticipated, you need to be putting more money aside for taxes.

#2. Create a separate account for your taxes: I use Capital One 360 (previously ING.) It’s super- easy to create an automated savings or checking account.

#3. Name the account “The Government’s Money”: The money you deposit into this account is not yours. It is the government’s money. Labeling it like this will be a gentle reminder that the money is not yours to touch. Do not borrow from this account!

#4. Deposit 20%: Every single time you make a deposit into your business account, you transfer 20% of that deposit into your tax account.

I most definitely suggest that you consult with your accountant about tax planning, but if you follow these simple tax tips for pet sitters you will always be prepared for tax season. Hallelujah!

Today is tax day and I’m completely prepared. I never thought I would see the day. I’m a happy Pet Nanny!

Your Homework Assignment:
If you don’t already have one, open a tax account where you can easily transfer at least 20% of your business deposits into. Then name the account “The Government’s Money.” You’ll thank me later. 😉

The Top 3 Pet Sitting Marketing Mistakes

The Top 3 Pet Sitting Marketing Mistakes

Before we start, I want to make something very clear… If you are looking to scale your business, you need to adopt a certain type of mindset.

You must do your pet sitting marketing consistently to have a flow of new prospects come to your business.

Once you make this shift in consciousness you are going to jump to the next level of success quickly.

MISTAKE #1. Not knowing the average lifetime value of a customer (LTV.)

Learning this one piece of valuable information, completely changed the way I thought about my business and about my customers.

So, what is the lifetime value of a customer? In short, it is the projected revenue that a customer will spend during their time with your business.

A very simple math equation that you can use to figure this out is to divide your lifetime gross revenue by the # of lifetime revenue-generating customers.

LTV= Lifetime gross revenue ÷ # of lifetime generating clients

NOTE: This is the most basic way to figure this out. You can most definitely calculate a more targeted number by doing some more advanced math, but if at the very least you figure this equation, you will have a basic understanding of this concept.

When I did this math, I was astounded at how high that number was. Now I don’t feel badly about offering discounts or running promotions to pull-in new clients.

MISTAKE #2. Not having your company’s Unique Selling Propositions clearly defined.

What are Unique Selling Propositions? They are what set you apart from your competition. It is crucial that you spell out what makes you different, so that your business becomes the only clear choice. There are tons of pet sitting businesses out there all saying the same exact things. Get clear on your USP’s and you will shine in comparison. I named Pet Nanny’s USP’s The Pet Nanny Peace of Mind Blueprint. Take a look. You’ll see that I have clearly listed and explained how Pet Nanny is unique. Until you do this, your company will be like any old vanilla pet sitting service out there.

MISTAKE #3. Not setting goals and mapping out a plan to achieve them.

Here is a simple method for you.

Let’s say you want to make $75,000 next year. This is your annual goal.

Divide this # by 12 and you will get a monthly goal of $6,250.00.

Next, figure out how many clients you need or how many visits or overnights need to happen for you to achieve this.

So, let’s say you would need to have 9 daily mid day walks (with a monthly mid day customer averaging about $340 per month)= $3,060.00

$6,250-$3,060= $3,190

$3,190 is the leftover amount that you would need to generate with your pet sitting visits, house sitting assignments and any other extra services you offer. You could also aim to bring on more monthly customers and hire another walker to help with the walking.

QUOTE - The Top 3 Pet Sitting Marketing Mistakes

Once you have these #’s all figured out you can move on to the marketing piece where you map out exactly what needs to be done to bring in new clients and keep your current pet sitting customers happy (this is so important and often forgotten.)

This is where you need to execute your Pet Sitting Marketing Power Wheel. Each section of the wheel will help you reel in new, ideal customers.

Map out on a calendar exactly what you will do every week/month to bring in new leads. Include social media, blogging, article submissions, networking groups, stay-in-touch marketing, direct mail, referral partners, strategic alliances, promotional campaigns, video trainings, giveaways etc. Once you get clear on what marketing needs to happen, you simply plug it into your calendar and it’s done with for the year. You just need to follow the calendar. The key is to do it systematically and automate as much as you can. If you do this, you will always have plenty of clients. Remember to track your goals every week. What you track, grows!

Your Homework Assignment:
You have a lot to do this week.

  1. Figure out the Average Lifetime Value of Your Customer.
  2. Write down your Unique Selling Proposition.
  3. Get clear in your numbers. Set an annual goal and monthly goals and then map out a strategy to achieve them.

4 Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tips

Last week I discussed the importance of implementing with speed. This week I want to give you some very simple productivity tips. This is what I first teach my high-level pet sitting business coaching clients. I realize they may seem too simple to even matter, but trust me if you follow these tips you will become so much better at completing your tasks and growing your business faster.

Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tip #1: Before you start working on ANYTHING for the day, sit down for 5-10 minutes and WRITE DOWN your top 3 important tasks for that day.

Most people run straight to their email first thing in the morning. Don’t do this. Your email messages all come from people searching for answers from you. So, what happens? Your day starts by you reacting to the needs of everyone else. Not from a centered place where you are organizing the most important needs of your business for the day.

The 3 tasks that you choose for your day’s to-dos, should all be able to realistically be completed that day. The tasks can most certainly be part of a bigger project. Just be sure to keep them simple and attainable. The 3 tasks should also have importance to the growth of your business. Please nothing like, “call hairdresser.”

If you complete your 3 tasks, feel free to add more, but only start with 3. Too many tasks will overwhelm you, which will then cause procrastination.

Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tip #2: Always think of these two things when deciding which tasks to focus on…

  1. What tasks will bring me more pet sitting customers/leads for my business?
  2. What tasks will generate more revenue for my business?

When you focus your day on tasks that will GROW your business, you will start to see big results. You can also use my similar hack to plan out your week as I describe here.

Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tip #3: Tackle your hardest and most dreaded tasks first.

“The most valuable tasks you can do each day are often the hardest and most complex. But the payoff and rewards for completing these tasks efficiently can be tremendous.” ― Brian Tracy, Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time

Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tip #4: Work in 2-hour time blocks without interruption.

This means you turn off your cell phone, your email, your instant messaging, your Skype, your Facebook, your Twitter and anything else that is a time-suck for you. You then set a timer for 2-hours and you work without distraction until the timer sounds. You then get up and walk around and take a break for at least 15-minutes.

Pet Sitting Business Building Productivity Tips

Your Homework Assignment:
Start implementing these productivity tips tomorrow and do them all for at least 3 weeks. That’s how long it takes to create a new habit. I think you’ll be absolutely amazed at what you’re able to achieve. Let me know how it goes. Good luck!

It’s Ok to Have a Successful Pet Sitting Business

Success in Your Pet Sitting Business

Today, our topic is SUCCESS, which is usually a taboo topic that people don’t like to talk about. Why? I’m not quite sure, but I definitely used to be one of those people. Well today, I’m going to talk about it, because there’s nothing to be ashamed of about being successful with your pet sitting business.

Having a successful and happy life is something that I am super proud of, and part of that success comes from my amazing pet sitting business. It has brought me so many blessings both financially and emotionally. It has taught me countless things about animals, people, life and business.

Let The Haters Hate and Keep Being Awesome

I’m here to tell you today that there’s nothing wrong with you achieving success through your pet sitting businesses, and don’t you dare let the haters dim your light and your dream. You know who I mean. Those solo pet sitting business owners who don’t want to grow a team and scale their businesses (totally fine, by the way!) Some of these haters will go around saying, “Oh, she’s just in it for the money,” or “They don’t care about the animals,” or “They must provide awful service.” This is backward thinking, and negative statements made by people with limiting beliefs, and I have no time for it anymore!

Today I’m telling those people that they couldn’t be more incorrect! I can tell you from personal experience that nobody loves pets more than I do, but there came a time where I was unable to continue working the number of hours that I was working. Seven days a week, 365 days a year wasn’t a lifestyle that I wanted to lead. I was unhappy and exhausted, and by the end, I wasn’t giving the best pet care, because I was utterly burned out.

Focus on the Growth of Your Pet Sitting Business

Since I started focusing on the growth of my business and hiring heart-centered pet care professionals to join my dream team, my company has grown exponentially because they are out there providing amazing pet care and our customers rave about us and refer us all over town. I’m now also able to service many more pet owners in my community due to the excellent pet sitters on my staff.

There is no shame in my game. I am proud of my pet sitting business. It affords me the time to be able to do the things that I love like paddle and tennis. It has also given me the opportunity to be a stay at home mom with my three children, Lucy, James, and Connor. It has given me the financial freedom to own a beautiful home and take vacations. My business has been a blessing!

pet sitting business

The Equation for How to Make it Happen

If this is something that you want, I challenge you to go for it! But you have to go and get it. It’s not just going to come and fall in your lap. It takes hard work and focus. You need to learn, and you need to implement, and you need to go grab your dream.

I used to walk dogs and daydream. I would think “I would really love to have a big business. Maybe one day it’ll just happen.” That’s not the way it works! It starts in your mind, but here’s the formula:

Thoughts equal feelings which inspire your actions, which create your results.

So my advice here for you today is to take massive action in your business. Get out there, start learning. Go for it. Grow it, if that’s what you want to do. There is no shame in it.

And if you’re already out there killing it, don’t hang your head, don’t be embarrassed, and don’t let the haters out there make you feel poorly because you’ve created an awesome pet sitting business doing what you love and serving your community through your incredible business with an inspiring mission. Be proud, my friends.
