Your Energy Audit: What’s Draining You?
You finished a 10-minute phone call with a client. Just 10 minutes. But somehow you feel like you ran a marathon.
Meanwhile, you spent two hours doing pet visits this morning and felt energized the whole time.
What gives?
Here’s what most petpreneurs don’t realize: not all tasks drain you equally. Some activities steal way more energy than the time they take would suggest. Others actually fill your tank.
Until you identify which is which, you’ll keep wondering why you’re exhausted by Thursday every single week.
Welcome to the Energy Audit.
What Is an Energy Audit?
An Energy Audit is a systematic review of everything in your business (and life) that drains your energy. It’s about getting specific. Really specific.
“I’m tired all the time” isn’t useful information. “Phone calls with Mrs. Henderson leave me completely depleted” is something you can actually fix.
Think of it like this. If your phone battery was dying by noon every day, you wouldn’t just accept it. You’d check which apps were draining it in the background. You’d close the ones you don’t need. You’d optimize.
Your energy works the same way. Something is running in the background, draining you. The Energy Audit helps you find it.
Want to conduct your own Energy Audit?
I created a free Energy Audit Worksheet that walks you through all five drain categories with specific questions for pet business owners. Send me a message with the word AUDIT, and I’ll send it straight to your inbox.
Why Pet Business Owners Need an Energy Audit
The pet care industry has unique energy challenges. You’re physically active all day. You’re emotionally invested in animals and their owners. You’re often working alone without colleagues to share the load. And you’re available at hours most businesses aren’t.
That’s a recipe for sneaky energy drains that accumulate over time.
Here’s what happens when you DON’T audit your energy:
You blame yourself for being tired. “I just need more discipline.” “I should be able to handle this.” “Other pet sitters manage, why can’t I?” Nope. You’re not weak. You’re drained by something specific.
You treat all tasks as equal. Booking a new client and dealing with a chronically late client feel very different, but they both get scheduled the same way.
Burnout sneaks up on you. One day you’re fine. The next day you can’t get out of bed. Energy drains are cumulative. They build until they break you.
You can’t figure out why you dread your business. You started this because you love animals. Now Sunday nights fill you with anxiety. Something shifted, but you can’t pinpoint what.
Growth feels impossible. How can you add more clients when you’re already running on empty?
The Energy Audit gives you clarity. Once you NAME the drains, you can fix them.
The Five Categories of Energy Drains
Let’s break this down into specific, actionable categories. Grab a notebook. Be brutally honest.
Category 1: Communication Drains
These are the conversations, messages, and interactions that leave you feeling worse than before.
Ask yourself:
Which clients text you at all hours expecting immediate responses?
Which email threads make your stomach drop when you see them in your inbox?
Which phone calls do you avoid returning?
Which conversations leave you mentally replaying them for hours afterward?
Which communication channels feel overwhelming? (Too many texts? Constant app notifications? Email overload?)
Common communication drains for pet sitters:
The client who sends 47 texts about their “anxious baby” before every visit.
The prospect who asks a million questions but never actually books.
The “quick question” that turns into a 45-minute phone call.
The passive-aggressive email that takes you three hours to craft a response to.
The client who only communicates complaints, never appreciation.
What to do about communication drains:
Set specific communication windows and stick to them. Batch your email responses. Create templates for common questions. And yes, sometimes you need to fire a client. (More on that in Category 3.)
Category 2: Task Drains
These are the activities you procrastinate on, dread, or feel inexplicably exhausted after completing.
Ask yourself:
What task do you move to tomorrow’s list every single day?
What do you dread more than anything on your weekly schedule?
What makes you feel incompetent or frustrated?
What tasks take way longer than they should because you can’t focus?
What do you do manually that feels tedious and repetitive?
Common task drains for pet sitters:
Bookkeeping and invoicing (especially if you’re not a numbers person).
Social media content creation (the pressure to be creative on demand).
Difficult client conversations about pricing, policies, or problems.
Administrative busywork that feels pointless but necessary.
Scheduling tetris when things don’t fit neatly.
What to do about task drains:
First, identify if this task actually needs to happen at all. (Sometimes the answer is no.) Then decide: automate it, delegate it, or batch it during your valley hours when you have lower energy anyway.

Category 3: People Drains
This is the hard one. Some people in your business (and life) drain your energy more than others. That’s not a judgment. It’s just reality.
Ask yourself:
Which clients leave you feeling exhausted after every interaction?
Which client relationships feel one-sided (all take, no give)?
Which team members require constant supervision or create drama?
Which relationships in your life don’t support your business goals?
Who do you avoid, even though you can’t quite articulate why?
Common people drains for pet sitters:
The micromanager client who doesn’t trust you despite years of perfect service.
The chronic complainer who’s never satisfied.
The boundary-pusher who always needs “just one more thing.”
The late payer who makes you chase invoices every month.
The energy vampire who dumps their problems on you during visits.
What to do about people drains:
Here’s the truth. Some clients aren’t worth keeping. Calculate the true cost of a draining client: the energy, the stress, the mental bandwidth, the recovery time after dealing with them. Often, firing that client frees up space for three better ones.
For team drains, have direct conversations. Set clear expectations. And if things don’t improve, make changes. Your energy is not an unlimited resource.
Category 4: System Drains
These are the processes, tools, and workflows in your business that create unnecessary friction.
Ask yourself:
Where are you doing things manually that could be automated?
Which systems feel clunky, outdated, or frustrating?
Where do you waste time because things aren’t organized?
What makes you think “there has to be a better way” every time you do it?
What would you change about how your business operates if you had a magic wand?
Common system drains for pet sitters:
Manual scheduling instead of using booking software.
Chasing payments instead of having automatic invoicing.
Answering the same questions repeatedly instead of having a FAQ or welcome packet.
Disorganized client information spread across texts, emails, and notes.
No standard operating procedures, so everything requires active thinking.
What to do about system drains:
Invest time upfront to save time forever. Set up proper booking software. Create templates for common emails. Build a client onboarding system. Document your processes. Yes, it takes effort initially. But it pays dividends every single week after.

Category 5: Personal Drains
These are your own habits, patterns, and choices that work against you. This one requires real honesty.
Ask yourself:
Where are you saying yes when you should say no?
What boundaries don’t exist yet (but should)?
What habits are sabotaging your energy? (Sleep, nutrition, exercise, scrolling?)
Where are you being a perfectionist when good enough would do?
What are you tolerating that you shouldn’t be?
Common personal drains for pet sitters:
Saying yes to every booking request, even when your schedule is full.
Checking work messages during personal time (and never truly disconnecting).
Skipping meals during busy days and crashing later.
Doom-scrolling social media instead of actually resting.
Perfectionism that turns a 30-minute task into a 3-hour ordeal.
What to do about personal drains:
Start with one boundary. Just one. Maybe it’s not checking messages after 7 PM. Maybe it’s taking a real lunch break. Maybe it’s saying no to the next last-minute booking request.
Small boundaries build into big energy savings.
How to Conduct Your Energy Audit
Here’s the step-by-step process:
Step 1: Block 30 minutes of uninterrupted time.
This isn’t something you can do while multitasking. Grab coffee. Close your notifications. Get honest with yourself.
Step 2: Go through each of the five categories.
Write down everything that comes to mind. Don’t filter. Don’t justify. Just capture.
Step 3: Rate each drain on a scale of 1 to 10.
How much energy does this drain cost you? A 10 is “completely depletes me.” A 1 is “mildly annoying but manageable.”
Step 4: Identify your top three drains.
Look at your list. Which three drains are stealing the most energy? These are your priorities.
Step 5: Choose ONE action for each top drain.
You don’t have to fix everything at once. For each of your top three drains, decide: Will you eliminate it? Delegate it? Set a boundary around it? Systematize it?
Step 6: Schedule those actions.
Don’t just think about it. Put it in your calendar. “Tuesday 11 AM: Have conversation with Mrs. Henderson about communication expectations.”

What Happens After Your Energy Audit
After completing your Energy Audit and taking action on your top drains, here’s what changes:
You have more energy at the end of the day. Not because you worked less, but because you stopped the leaks.
You dread your business less. When you eliminate what drains you, what’s left is what energizes you.
You make better decisions. Mental energy isn’t infinite. When you stop wasting it on drains, you have more for what matters.
You can actually grow. Adding more clients when you’re depleted is impossible. Adding more clients when you’ve eliminated drains? That’s sustainable scaling.
You enjoy your life again. This isn’t just about business. Energy drains affect everything: your relationships, your health, your happiness.
The Valentine’s Day Connection
Here’s the thing. February is all about love. And if you want to build a business you actually love, you have to eliminate what’s making you resent it.
The Energy Audit is an act of self-care. It’s looking at your business honestly and saying, “What’s not working for me anymore?”
You deserve a business that energizes you. You deserve clients who appreciate you. You deserve systems that support you instead of frustrating you.
But you have to identify what’s draining you first.
Your Challenge This Week
Block 30 minutes. Work through the five categories. Identify your top three energy drains. Take ONE action on each.
That’s it. One Energy Audit. Three actions.
Your future self will thank you.
