You Built a Job, Not a Business: How Pet Sitters Can Stop Being the Most Overworked Employee in Their Own Company

You started your pet business for freedom.

More money. More time. More control over your life. Maybe you wanted to leave a soul-sucking 9-to-5. Maybe you just loved animals so much you thought, “Why not get paid to do this?”

And it worked. You built something real.

But somewhere between the midnight client texts, the last-minute schedule changes, the bookkeeping you keep “getting to,” and the sick days you cover yourself because there’s literally no one else… something shifted.

You stopped building a business. And you started building a job you can’t quit.

Here’s the truth: you’re not alone. This is the most common trap in the pet sitting industry. And the good news? Once you see it clearly, you can start fixing it.

The Trap Nobody Talks About

Most petpreneurs hit a ceiling and they can’t figure out why. They’re working harder than ever. Longer days. More clients. More revenue, even. But somehow there’s never more time. Never more freedom. And definitely never more profit.

That’s because they’ve built their entire business around one person: themselves.

They are the scheduler. The bookkeeper. The marketer. The customer service rep. The pet sitter. The dog walker. The social media manager. The HR department. The janitor.

They are every single employee in a company that desperately needs a CEO.

And you can’t be both.

Think of it like this: if you spend 80% of your week on tasks that someone else could handle for $15 to $20 an hour, you’re paying yourself $15 to $20 an hour. Even if your business is making great money, YOUR time isn’t being valued at what it’s worth.

That’s not a business. That’s a really exhausting, really expensive job.

CEO Tasks vs. Employee Tasks: The Shift That Changes Everything

The petpreneurs who actually scale to $10K months and beyond all figured out one thing: not every task deserves their attention.

They learned to separate CEO tasks from employee tasks. And that one distinction changed the trajectory of their entire business.

So what’s the difference?

CEO tasks are the things that only YOU can do. The things that move your business forward strategically. Setting your vision and goals. Building relationships with high-value clients. Making growth decisions. Developing your team. Creating new revenue streams. Planning for the future. Networking and partnerships. This is the work that actually scales your business.

Employee tasks are the things that keep your business running day to day but don’t require YOUR brain, YOUR expertise, or YOUR decision-making ability. Scheduling and calendar management. Responding to routine client inquiries. Invoicing and payment follow-ups. Data entry and record keeping. Social media posting. Ordering supplies. Updating your website. These are essential tasks, but they don’t need to be done by the person whose name is on the business.

Here’s the gut check: look at your last week honestly. How much time did you spend on CEO work versus employee work?

If you’re like most pet business owners I coach, the answer is somewhere around 80% employee tasks and 20% CEO tasks.

That ratio needs to flip.

The CEO vs. Employee Audit: Your First Step Out of the Trap

You can’t fix what you can’t see. That’s why the very first thing I do with petpreneurs inside my Multiply Mastermind is walk them through this audit.

Here’s the simplified version:

Step 1: Track your time for one week. Every task. Every interruption. Every “quick thing” that takes 45 minutes. Write it all down. Don’t judge it. Just capture it.

Step 2: Categorize each task. Put a C next to anything that’s true CEO work. Put an E next to everything else. Be brutally honest with yourself.

Step 3: Look at the E column. For each employee task, ask yourself three questions. Can this be automated with software or a system? Can this be delegated to a team member or virtual assistant? Can this be eliminated entirely because it doesn’t actually matter?

Step 4: Pick your first three tasks to remove from your plate. Not ten. Not everything. Three. Start there.

That’s it. That’s the beginning of building a real business instead of a really demanding job.

I’ve got a complete CEO vs. Employee Audit worksheet that walks you through this entire process with guided prompts and examples. Want it? Send me a message with the word CEO. It’s free and it takes less than 10 minutes.

“But Nobody Can Do It Like I Can”

Let’s talk about this one. Because I hear it constantly.

“My clients expect ME.” “Nobody will care as much as I do.” “It’s faster to just do it myself.” “Last time I tried to delegate, it was a disaster.”

I get it. I really do. I said every single one of these things when I was building my own pet sitting business.

But here’s what I learned: that voice isn’t protecting your business. It’s protecting your ego. And it’s keeping you stuck.

Your clients don’t need YOU answering every email. They need timely, professional communication. Your business doesn’t need YOU doing every invoice. It needs accurate, consistent billing. Your growth doesn’t need YOU posting on social media. It needs a consistent presence with a clear message.

You are replaceable in 80% of what you do every day. And that’s not an insult. That’s your freedom.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the tasks that need to leave your plate?

My Virtual Assistant service at petsitterva.com specializes in helping petpreneurs delegate scheduling, client communication, and admin work so you can get back to being the CEO. Let’s talk about what that looks like for you.

What Happens When You Start Leading Like a CEO

When you finally make this shift, everything changes. Your weeks feel lighter because you’re not drowning in tasks that drain you. Your business grows because you actually have time for strategy, relationships, and vision. Your team steps up because you’re giving them the space to own their roles. Your clients get better service because you’re not stretched so thin that everything gets half your attention. Your revenue increases because you’re spending time on the activities that actually generate growth.

And maybe the biggest shift of all? You stop resenting the business you built. You start loving it again.

Because you remember why you started this in the first place. Freedom. Flexibility. A life built on YOUR terms. Not a cage built out of client schedules and admin tasks.

Your Challenge: Do the Audit This Week

Here’s what I want you to do before next Sunday. Track your time for just three days. Write down everything you do. Then grab that piece of paper, draw a line down the middle, and sort it all into CEO tasks and employee tasks.

Look at those two columns. Really look.

Then ask yourself: is this how a CEO spends their week?

If the answer is no, you’ve just taken the most important first step. You can see it now. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
