Success Habit #1: The Three Task Rule

Hey there, petpreneurs! Colleen Sedgwick here from Pet Nanny Coach, and I’m kicking off a brand new series on success habits that you can start implementing immediately in your pet sitting business to start seeing real results.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re spinning your wheels—working hard but not moving the needle—this series is for you.

Let’s start with one of my favorites: the Three Task Rule.

What Is the Three Task Rule?

Every single day, I want you to grab your notebook and write down your three non-negotiable tasks.

Not five. Not ten. Not twelve.

Three.

And these aren’t just any random tasks you pull from your never-ending to-do list. These are the tasks that are going to bring you closer to your goals. The ones that actually move the needle in your business.

Why Only Three Tasks?

When you try to do everything, you end up doing nothing well. Or worse, you spend your entire day putting out fires and handling busywork while the truly important stuff—the tasks that will grow your business—gets pushed to tomorrow.

The Three Task Rule forces you to get real about what’s actually going to make a difference.

When you complete those three non-negotiable tasks, you’re going to start feeling momentum building. You’re going to go to bed feeling productive, knowing that you’ve moved closer to what you’re trying to create in your business and in your life.

What Should Your Three Tasks Be?

Your three tasks should be tied directly to your business goals. Here are some examples:

If your goal is to book more clients:

  • Follow up with three warm leads
  • Post engaging content on social media
  • Update your website with a clear call-to-action

If your goal is to build a team:

  • Post a job ad on two platforms
  • Review and respond to applicants
  • Conduct one interview

If your goal is to create systems:

  • Document your client onboarding process
  • Create an SOP for your pet sitters
  • Set up one automation in your scheduling software

The key is this: your three tasks should be specific, actionable, and directly connected to the outcomes you want to create.

How to Make It Stick

Do it first thing in the morning. Before you check your email, before you scroll social media—write down your three tasks. Give yourself that clarity before anything else tries to steal your focus.

Make them visible. Write them on a sticky note and put it on your computer. Keep them front and center so you can’t ignore them.

Protect your time. Block out time in your calendar to actually complete these tasks. Treat them with the same importance as a client meeting.

The Compound Effect

Here’s what happens when you commit to the Three Task Rule:

Over the course of a week, you’ve completed 21 high-impact tasks.

Over the course of a month, you’ve completed 90+ tasks that matter.

Over the course of a year? You’ve completed over 1,000 intentional actions that have moved your business forward.

That’s how you go from overwhelmed solo sitter to six-figure business owner. Not by doing everything, but by consistently doing the right things.

Your Challenge: Start Today

Grab your notebook. Write down your three non-negotiable tasks for today. Not tomorrow. Not Monday. Today.

And then do them.

I can’t wait to see what happens when you bring this level of focus and intention to your business. 🐾

See you next time!
